The small caravan slowly wound its way up the side of the mountain. They were an odd site, dark skinned men from the southern lands rarely made it this far north, and their brightly coloured cloaks and tunics struck a stark contrast to the bleak hills that surrounded them.
At the heart of the group sat a short round man who frantically wiped his brow with a cloth that had long since been too soaked to help. The air was hot and thick and his portly frame bounced with each step of his horse. As a full member of the merchant guilds of Valencia he had traveled the steps of Kolosu his whole life but he had never felt such heat. Something was stirring out there. Something just out of sight.
Like an itch you can't quite reach, he thought. There was a foulness to this place today. He could feel it.
The flies that gathered around his procession buzzed around his head by the dozens. By his count it should be high noon and the sun should be blistering overhead but instead it was as dark as pitch. Black clouds thundered and roared yet no relieving rain came. By the gods he was roasting alive! How could there be such heat?
A bright flash and the crack of thunder from overhead broke his daze. It was another full day's march until he reached the gates of Sharhad in Basilia. The guards looked around uneasily. They could feel it too. There were no other travelers on the roads today. Perhaps the heat had driven everyone away? No...it was more than that, he thought. There wasn't anything on the road - not a bird, not a fox, not even a stray dog. Nothing but the sound of those accursed flies. These hills were well known for their bandits. Thieves who would descend upon the unprotected and weak with lightning raids. That was why he had hired half a dozen of the finest mercenaries coin could by. But there were no bandits today. There was nothing...
Waves of doubt began to run over him. The heat would spoil half his wares if he did not make it by morning. "Berren", he called out to the young fighter riding to the front of the group, "Scout the pass ahead. I think it best that we push on thru the night. I don't like it here today. There is a uneasiness that I can't shake.".
"As you wish, m'Lord." the man replied. Berren was young but had keen look to him. His narrow face and long nose reminded Torren of a Hawk. And hawk's like him had good eyes.
The merchant began to drift in his thoughts again. A cool bath in one of the marble houses and few pichers of Keretian wine would settle him. Perhaps he would visit the house of of the Seven Ladies again. If he could get his wares to the gates by morning...

Painting Tutorial- Painting the Scourge Heavy Infantry: Eviscerators and Destroyers
Since I've had a few requests I thought I'd post up a quick "how to" on creating the bone coloured/blood fused Scourge heavy infantry I've recently finished. Right now this is just a preview but over the next couple of weeks I'll be finishing a second set and doing a step by step.
In the meantime, here are my miniature minions of evil:

The Great Escape
Still working on my update for Captain Con and all the demos. In the meantime here is a cinematic shot from my game Saturday against Ian from "Andy G. and Ian C. 40k, WFB, DW, FS:A, BFG, Necro – and more!". I call it, "The Great Escape".
Turn 4 of our game with Ian up 2-0 in objectives my Immortal infantry finally kills off his Resistance and get into their Junos and the Dropship picks them up. As they're trying to flee twin Lifthawks are chasing them down while the Phobos railgun shots fill the sky. The Neptune made it off the board on the last turn, with a damage point left, to tie the game...

Revenge is a dish best served...lukewarm? (PHR versus Shaltari Battle Report)
Last Saturday Peter and I got in another game of DZC. We both are still experimenting around with units and how they work so this time it was still PHR versus Shaltari but we varied up the lists quite a bit.
The results were much more even this time, with a special MVP going to my Phobos and the newest member of my PHR -
THE HADES!!!!

Recon on Antilles IV
060615! Brian gets to game again. The last few months have been very busy between work and the rest of real life so it's been quite a while since I got a chance to sit (stand...) down and actually play a game. This week Klarg1 and I got a chance to try out full 1500 point DZC armies and his Shaltari faced off against my PHR.
On the plus side, my entire force was painted. On the negative side, it was all the more painful to watch them go down in flames...

A preview of things to come...
Just a placeholder for now. I'm working on a battle report for Dropzone Commander and a painting update for my Directorate. Lots of stuff happening in the next few weeks. So in the meantime...here's a closeup of the action. This is before the Resistance Bikers came in and made short work of the Ares War Walkers but just after my Odins finished off a pair of Resistance tanks...
1300 points - only 200 more for a tourney sized army
Just a minor update this weekend. I'm at 1300 points now for my PHR - almost to a fully painted 1500 point army.
I need moar infantry! And some painted Sirens (they're in progress). I fear I have too many transports and not enough machines of war...
Still, fully painted and on the table it makes me feel pretty good.

Firestorm Armada Battle Report - Prelude to the RETURN OF THE OVERSEERS
Hey all,
So fellow blogger and gamer Klarg1 of "Bind Metal minis" and I have set a New Years goal to get some (hopefully) somewhat polished battle reports up online for the various mini games we play. Our plan is get some detailed turn by turn written as well as (gasp!) video battle reports up. This is the first in a series of reports that we'll be presenting which will lead up to the new boxed set "Return of the Overseers" as well as (possibly) a series of linked battles for Dropzone Commander that will deal with and introduce the Resistance and main campaign that's going on in that game world.
Our cross blog idea is that each of us will post up the same report (in terms of graphics) but give our own perspectives on how the battle went and our own turn by turn analysis. Hopefully the differing opinions will show how tactics evolve and different playstyles lead to different game decisions. Or it just might end up being a bunch of babble...but either way it'll come with pretty pictures :P.

Happy Holidays - toys from Santa's workshop!
Just a brief update on the Dropzone Commander progress. Lots of holiday parties this year and lots of time with friends and family has cut down on my painting time but I still managed to get some progress. Next time I'm going to have to kidnap some of Santa's elves and put 'em to work!

Let the games begin!!!
Oh right, I get to play a game with these guys...
Just a brief update this week. Last weekend I managed to get my first game in with my Dropzone Commander armies as Ian from "AndyG and Ian's miniatures game blog" and Klarg1 and I tried out the game and learned the basic rules.
I provided both armies as this was our first time out and I have the most painted figures. We wanted to see the figures on the table, check out Hawk Wargames terrain box, and really see the rules in action.

Finding Inspiration
"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." - Mark Twain
Applying the colours, using the various techniques, and finishing a model takes time, patience, and effort. But that's the fun part of the creation process.
The hardest part in painting for me has always been just finding the right scheme. It's in that "getting started" phase in which I spend the most time and have the most frustration. Test bed models, ruined paint schemes...I have buckets of figures with half done paint jobs, odd colours, and minor dents (from me tossing the poor things back into a box!). The challenge of finding the right colours, the right base coats and highlights, and all the final details is the mountain I have to climb before finally sitting down in front of a painted figure and having the joy of accomplishment that comes after that last coat of varnish.
It's to that end that I want to explore the things I use for inspiration...

Updates to Dropzone Commander and some new toys
The sound of the rain beats heavily on my window pane. The wind howls and the rumbling of my furnace kicks in.
The painting gods are saying "stay in Brian...your minis need you". Damn painting gods and their thrice cursed foretelling of winter...
(Translation: It was a cold and damp weekend and that means it was a perfect time to get some painting done.)

For the love of money...(My Firestorm Armada Directorate)
Behold my Directorate. The finest fleet that money can buy... literally. For they are the Corporate Evil Overlords of the Firestorm Armada Universe.
This is my latest work in progress Firestorm Armada Fleet. 75% done but it's at least tabletop worthy (I hope...). Here is a shot of my tournament fleet.

Week 6 - Painting the PHR for Dropzone Commander
Another week and a bit more progress. This time I'm focusing on the PHR the second faction I'm collecting for Dropzone Commander.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Post Human Republic are the ruthless hyper-intelligent members of those parts of humanity that fled before the coming of the Scourge. Influenced by an alien device that came to warn the Earth of the invasion they are a shadowy enclave of women and men who have decided to rise above the influence of pure nature and enhance themselves with the power of the machine.
In battle they are a slow and steady, a relentless march of sophisticated walkers and cyber-enhanced infantry. A mix of cyborgs from Ghost in the Shell and the special Ops of Black Widow they are elite core of technophiles, a near perfect blending of man and machine.
They believe that they are the future of humanity - they are humankind, 2.0.
